Retirement planning in Brisbane

Retirement planning answers three questions: when can I stop, how much can I spend, and will it last. FinForce helps people in Brisbane and across Queensland work through them, from Level 7, 190 Edward Street. Shay has been an authorised adviser since 18 October 2011 and is an Authorised Representative (AR 000412776) of Financial Force Pty Ltd, AFSL 238337. FinForce is authorised under Financial Force Pty Ltd AFSL 238337 (CAR 001241242).

Before you retire

The five to ten years before you stop work.

  • Your number. What you actually spend now, and what changes in retirement.
  • Super contributions. Using contribution caps (including carry-forward concessional contributions where you are eligible) while you are still earning. Check current caps on the ATO website.
  • Debt. Whether to clear the mortgage before you stop.
  • Timing. Your preservation age, when you can access super, and Age Pension age (currently 67).

Try our super growth calculator for a rough estimate.

At retirement

Turning super into income.

Common options include an account-based pension from your super fund, keeping some money outside super, and working out whether you qualify for any Age Pension under Services Australia’s income and assets tests. Each has different tax, flexibility and risk trade-offs, which is why the order you do things in matters.

In retirement

Keeping the plan on track.

Markets move, rules change and health and family situations change. We review the plan with you, adjust drawdowns, and keep your estate plan, beneficiary nominations and insurance in line. See how we work.

Common questions

When should I start retirement planning?

Ideally ten or more years out, when contribution and debt decisions have the most impact. But it is worth doing at any stage, including after you retire.

Can I get retirement advice if my super is with an industry fund?

Yes. Advice covers your whole position, wherever your super is held.

What does retirement advice cost?
